Children of Promise, NYC provides support to children affected by parental incarceration

Updated: Apr 27, 2023

The problem of mass incarceration affects not only affect the individuals incarcerated, but also their families - especially their children. In New York State alone, there are 105,000 children who have a parent in prison (Source: Children of Promise, NYC (CPNYC)).

Because of parental incarceration, the children experience uncertainty and trauma at an early age. Executive Director Sharon Content founded Children of Promise, NYC (CPNYC) to support them. The organization “reimagines a just society that values the purpose of every child impacted by mass incarceration and removes barriers to create opportunities for children to thrive and achieve their human potential.”

CPNYC was the first community-based organization that provided after school program and summer day camp in New York City, specifically for the children left behind by their parents’ incarceration. So far, CPNYC has provided services to 1,500 children and their families.

The organization has developed community partnerships, raised over $5M dollars in government and philanthropic funding, and established its own innovative and holistic model to support children of incarcerated parents to live a healthy life. This model includes recreational activities, academic support, mental health services, family engagement, 1:1 mentoring, and art and cultural activities.
