Hot Chicken Takeover changes lives through fair-chance hiring

Hot Chicken Takeover is an Ohio-based restaurant chain who decided to make a difference when it comes to hiring its employees. Joe DeLoss, the owner of Hot Chicken Takeover, wanted to focus on giving opportunity to people who have significant barriers to employment because of the criminal justice system. The company’s mission is to address the problem by hiring people who might be denied elsewhere. Currently, almost 40% of its 172 workers have come out of the justice system.

The company doesn’t only hire formerly-incarcerated individuals, but also helps with referrals to mental health counseling and housing services, emergency cash assistance, and a savings-matching program.

“I just felt a lot more compelled by the impact economic opportunity and mobility could provide along somebody’s journey in life. I had just really formed a thesis that if you can be a positive, supportive employer to a community of people in need of positive and supportive work opportunities, that you can build a strong, reliable team,” - Joe DeLoss, Founder of Hot Chicken Takeover
