What experience did you have with the criminal justice system?

Demetrick: “In 1997, my first initial charge was attempted murder and the lack of evidence dropped it down to aggravated battery with great bodily harm and danger. I had to do prison time for three years, and I had another charge, which was an L&L [ Lewd and Lascivious Behavior]. I received a split sentence for both. I got time for the violent charge and I got probation for the other. It is hard to get rid of it. I mean after a decade it just lingers.”

What experience did you have before and after you found Honest Jobs?

Demetrick: “Steady work was difficult. I was doing odd jobs, like day labor, a few restaurant jobs here and there. I was doing enough to make ends meet until our house burned down. That put us in a situation where we had to be helped by the Red Cross and right now we are in a program called Rapid Housing Coalition. It’s for homeless people or for people who have been through a tragedy.

Actually, it was my mom who sent me the link [to Honest Jobs]. I was kind of doubtful because I've been through the same scenario with other temp agencies. Honest Jobs was a game changer for me. It gave me a sense of confidence, like hey she's [recruiter at Honest Jobs] on top of this, she knows what she's doing."

Tell us about your new job!

Demetrick: “Right now, I’m training as a machine operator in the auto section. The pay is great, it’s $16 an hour. The benefits are really great. Instead of waiting 90 days the benefits are in effect immediately. That was super awesome right there. I'm looking forward to a good future with them. I was blessed.”

Would you recommend honest jobs to other formerly incarcerated job seekers?

Demetrick: “Absolutely. Oh, absolutely. I mean, I can't stop talking about it now. There are no gimmicks. There are no empty promises. They actually got the job done. I’m grateful. I think what you're doing now is absolutely great.”
